How many satellites are in orbit?
There are roughly 12,000 working satellites in orbit and around 14,000 satellites total including dead ones, a figure that has roughly quadrupled since 2019. One operator accounts for most of it: Starlink alone has over 7,000 satellites aloft, more than every other operator and every previous decade combined. Nearly all of them are in low Earth orbit below 1,000 km, where atmospheric drag will de-orbit them within a few years if they stop manoeuvring. About 500 more satellites are launched every month.
How the figure is arrived at
The US Space Force's Space Surveillance Network tracks every object it can with radar and optical telescopes and publishes a catalogue; operators separately declare which of their satellites are still functioning. "Active" versus "in orbit" differ by a couple of thousand, and articles routinely mix the two.
