Under a dark sky you can see roughly one star for every 22 million in the Milky Way — and the faint band of the Milky Way itself is the unresolved glow of the rest.

The Yale Bright Star Catalogue lists 9,096 stars brighter than magnitude 6.5, which is the conventional naked-eye limit for a good observer under a dark sky. You never see them all: half are below the horizon, and stars near the horizon are dimmed by the atmosphere, so from one spot on one night the realistic figure is about 2,000 to 2,500. From a suburban garden it collapses to a few hundred, and from a city centre to a few dozen. This is the answer to a question people expect to be "billions".
