How many servers are there in the world?
Somewhere around 100 million physical servers are in operation, concentrated overwhelmingly in a small number of very large facilities: there are roughly 1,000 hyperscale data centres worldwide and perhaps 8,000 to 11,000 data centres of any size. About 12 million servers ship each year. Data centres consume roughly 1 to 1.5% of world electricity, a share that had been flat for a decade thanks to efficiency gains and is now rising again because of AI workloads.
How the figure is arrived at
Server shipments are tracked per quarter by vendor; the installed base follows from a replacement cycle of about five years. Cloud providers do not disclose fleet sizes, so their capacity is inferred from data centre floor area, disclosed power draw and known rack densities — an indirect chain that makes the total uncertain by tens of percent.
