What is a Shoe sole made of?
A rubber outsole for grip, a foam midsole for cushioning, and increasingly no clean way to separate them.
Foam midsoles fail invisibly. EVA takes a permanent compression set from repeated loading, so cushioning is largely gone long before the outsole looks worn — which is where the 500-800 km replacement rule of thumb for running shoes comes from. Supercritical foaming, where gas is dissolved into the polymer under pressure and expanded, is what produced the current generation of light, springy midsoles; the same shoe with a carbon plate is what led athletics governing bodies to regulate stack height. The environmental cost is bonding: a modern trainer is many materials glued into an inseparable laminate, which is why almost none of it is recycled.
