What is a Synthetic leather made of?
A polyurethane or PVC skin on a textile backing — including the plant-based ones, which still need a plastic binder.
The failure mode of polyurethane synthetic leather is hydrolysis: water molecules slowly cut the polymer chains, and after five to ten years the surface goes sticky and then flakes off in sheets, faster in humid heat. That is why old faux-leather sofas and camera bags disintegrate while a leather one from the 1950s is merely worn. The environmental comparison is genuinely contested — synthetics avoid livestock and chrome tanning but are fossil-derived, shorter-lived and shed microplastics — and plant-based alternatives are frequently marketed by their plant content while still being mostly polyurethane by weight.
