What it means
This normally appears alongside a dry-clean symbol, because the item still has to be cleaned somehow — structured tailoring, fused interlinings, leather trims, glued appliqué and most fabric-covered furnishings. Water is the problem, not the detergent: it swells and shrinks the components at different rates, so a jacket that gets wet can come out with a rippled collar and a chest panel that no longer lies flat. If the label carries this and a crossed-out dry-clean circle too, the item is genuinely not cleanable and should only be sponged locally.
Defined by ISO 3758. Where a symbol differs between standards, the difference is described above rather than resolved — both versions are in circulation on real labels.
