What it looks like

What it means
This is a ceiling, not a target — colder is always safe. It appears on anything that shrinks, bleeds dye or relaxes: cotton knitwear, mixed-fibre shirts, most modern dark clothing. Washing at 30 rather than 40 uses roughly a third less energy per cycle, which is why manufacturers increasingly print it even where the fabric would tolerate more. The one thing 30 °C does not do is sanitise; for towels, bedding and anything a sick household has used, the temperature has to go up.
Defined by ISO 3758. Where a symbol differs between standards, the difference is described above rather than resolved — both versions are in circulation on real labels.
