What it looks like

What it means
On its own with no number, it says washing is allowed but the temperature is left to you, which in practice means the garment is not heat-sensitive. Every other laundry symbol is a modifier on this one: a number sets the ceiling, bars underneath cut the agitation, a hand replaces machine washing altogether. If the tub is missing from a label entirely, look for the crossed-out version before assuming washing is safe.
