Mild wash — one bar under the tub
Wash at the stated temperature but with reduced mechanical action — the permanent press or synthetics cycle.
What it looks like
A washtub with a single horizontal bar drawn underneath it, usually with a temperature inside.
What it means
The bar says nothing about heat; it cuts agitation and spin speed. It exists because creasing, pilling and seam distortion come from the drum tumbling clothes against each other, not from the water. On a modern machine the closest match is the synthetics or easy-care programme, and reducing the spin to around 800 rpm does most of the work. Ignoring the bar rarely destroys a garment outright — it just ages it several washes at a time.
