What it means
Uncommon on clothing and mostly seen on colourfast cottons and workwear. Few domestic machines offer a 50 °C programme, so in practice the choice is 40 or 60 and 40 is the safe reading. It sits at the point where the enzymes in biological detergent start to lose activity — above roughly 50 °C protease and amylase denature, so a hotter wash is not automatically a better one on protein stains like blood, egg or grass.
