What it means
Effectively the hottest wash a domestic machine offers, and only white cotton and linen tolerate it. It is a disinfection setting rather than a cleaning one: nothing gets meaningfully cleaner between 60 and 95 °C, but a boil wash sterilises. Repeated use yellows white cotton over time and destroys any elastic in the waistband, so it belongs to nappies, tea towels and outbreak laundry, not to a weekly routine.
