What it looks like
A twisted length of fabric — like a wrung-out cloth — with a cross through it.
What it means
Wringing stretches the wet fabric along one axis and sets that distortion as it dries, which is how a jumper acquires a longer sleeve than the other. Press the water out between towels instead, or use a short slow spin if the label allows one. This symbol was dropped from ISO 3758 in favour of the mechanical-action bars, so on a current European label the instruction hides in the two bars under the tub — but it is still printed on Japanese, older UK and many US labels, and on hand-wash-only knitwear it is the single most useful line on the tag.
Defined by ASTM D5489 and legacy ISO labelling. Where a symbol differs between standards, the difference is described above rather than resolved — both versions are in circulation on real labels.
