What it looks like

What it means
A modifier rather than a symbol in its own right — it can be added to line dry, drip dry or dry flat. Ultraviolet light breaks the chemical bonds in most dyes, so direct sun fades dark and bright colours measurably within a few afternoons, and it degrades nylon, elastane and silk fibres themselves rather than just their colour. The exception is white cotton, where sunlight bleaches yellowing out and is doing you a favour.
Defined by ISO 3758. Where a symbol differs between standards, the difference is described above rather than resolved — both versions are in circulation on real labels.
