The recovery timeline after stopping smoking is one of the best-characterised in medicine because it has been measured in very large populations. Carbon monoxide levels in blood fall to those of a non-smoker within about 12 to 24 hours, which alone improves oxygen delivery. Ciliary function in the airways recovers over weeks to months, which is why the cough often gets temporarily worse before it improves — the lungs regain the ability to clear themselves. Within a year the excess risk of coronary heart disease is roughly halved, and within 10 to 15 years lung cancer risk falls to somewhere between that of a continuing smoker and a never-smoker, depending on the exposure history. The gains apply at every age, and stopping before about 40 avoids most of the excess mortality associated with continued smoking.
