Around three quarters of the world's leading crop types benefit to some degree from animal pollination, which is the number usually quoted, but those crops account for something closer to a third of global food volume and a much smaller share of calories. The staples that keep people alive — wheat, rice, maize, barley, sorghum — are grasses, and grasses are wind-pollinated, so they would be unaffected. What would be lost or badly damaged are the crops that make diets nutritious and varied: almonds, apples, blueberries, avocados, coffee, cocoa, and most fruits and many vegetables, along with the alfalfa and clover that feed livestock. The result would be a poorer, more expensive and much less nutritious food supply with real health consequences, particularly for micronutrient intake, rather than mass starvation. Bees are also not the only pollinators — flies, beetles, butterflies, bats and birds all contribute, and some crops rely on them primarily.
