The world's glaciers and ice sheets hold enough water to raise global sea level by roughly 70 metres if all of it melted, with the great majority locked in Antarctica and most of the rest in Greenland. That is not a scenario for this century — complete melting would take many thousands of years even under extreme warming — but the number is well constrained because ice volume is measured directly by satellite and radar. Sea ice is a separate case and contributes almost nothing to sea level, because floating ice already displaces its own weight; the Arctic Ocean losing its ice cover changes albedo and ecosystems rather than sea level. A 70-metre rise would submerge most major coastal cities, low-lying countries entirely, and large fractions of Florida, Bangladesh and the Netherlands. Removing the ice load would also cause the underlying crust to rebound over millennia, partly offsetting the rise in formerly glaciated regions.
