What happens if you swallow gum?

Chewing gum base is a synthetic elastomer that human digestive enzymes cannot break down, which is the grain of truth the myth grew from. Being indigestible is not the same as being immovable: the gut moves material along mechanically, and gum travels the same route and on much the same schedule as anything else, typically appearing in stool within one to two days. The sweeteners and flavourings are digested normally; only the base passes intact. The only documented problems involve children swallowing large quantities of gum in a short period, occasionally alongside other objects, which has caused bowel obstruction in a handful of case reports. For an adult swallowing a piece of gum, nothing happens at all.
