A point on the equator moves at about 465 metres per second — roughly 1,670 kilometres per hour — and everything on the surface shares that motion. If the planet stopped abruptly, the atmosphere, oceans and everything loose would continue at that speed, which is the catastrophic version of the question. If it stopped gradually the sequence is different and stranger: a solar day would become a solar year, giving six months of daylight and six of darkness with enormous temperature contrasts. Earth's rotation also maintains an equatorial bulge of about 43 kilometres, and without it the planet would relax toward a sphere, allowing the oceans to migrate toward the poles and leaving a continuous equatorial landmass. The magnetic field, generated by convection in the liquid outer core organised partly by rotation, would very likely weaken substantially, removing much of the shielding against solar wind.
