How loud does a sound have to be to kill you?

How loud does a sound have to be to kill you?
Sound alone cannot exceed about 194 dB in air — beyond that it is a blast wave, and blast is what causes injury.
Instant hearing damage above ~120-140 dB; blast lung injury from overpressure, not from sound as such

A sound wave in air is an oscillation of pressure around one atmosphere, so the largest possible undistorted wave has troughs at vacuum — which corresponds to about 194 decibels. Anything described as louder than that is really a shock wave with a different physical character, and its damage comes from overpressure rather than from sound. Hearing damage happens far below that ceiling: prolonged exposure above 85 decibels causes permanent loss over time, 120 decibels is painful, and impulses around 140 decibels can rupture an eardrum immediately. Blast overpressure injures air-filled organs — lungs, ears, bowel — and becomes life-threatening at a few tens of kilopascals above ambient. So the honest answer to "can sound kill you" is that the lethal versions are explosions, and the everyday versions quietly destroy hearing instead.

What happens, in order

When What
85 dB Permanent hearing damage with prolonged repeated exposure
120 dB Immediate discomfort and pain
140 dB Impulse noise at this level can rupture an eardrum outright
~194 dB The physical ceiling for a sound wave in air at sea level

Physiology, not instruction. Every figure here is a population range under particular conditions, and individual variation is large — temperature, exertion, fitness and health move all of them substantially. Nothing on this page is medical advice.
