How long can you survive in a house fire?
Most fire deaths are caused by inhaling smoke and toxic gases rather than by burns. Burning synthetic furnishings release carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and irritants that incapacitate within a few breaths, and the smoke layer builds downward from the ceiling, so visibility and breathable air disappear at head height first. Modern rooms burn far faster than rooms furnished in the 1970s: fire research organisations have measured time to flashover — the moment everything combustible in a room ignites at once — falling from roughly seventeen minutes to around three. After flashover, no unprotected person in that room survives. This is also the reason a closed bedroom door measurably changes outcomes, and why working smoke alarms matter more than any other domestic safety measure: they buy back the minutes the furnishings took away.
