What it means
Perc is the traditional dry-cleaning solvent and the most aggressive one in normal use, so a circled P is the broadest instruction on a European label — a cleaner who works in hydrocarbon or another lighter solvent can take the garment too. Its meaning shifts slightly across the Atlantic: under ASTM D5489 the P means any solvent except trichloroethylene. Perc is being phased down in several jurisdictions on health and environmental grounds, and many cleaners now run hydrocarbon or wet-cleaning equipment instead, which is why the F and W symbols increasingly matter.
Defined by ISO 3758. Where a symbol differs between standards, the difference is described above rather than resolved — both versions are in circulation on real labels.
