Do not dry (natural drying prohibited)

Do not dry (natural drying prohibited)
Do not dry the item after washing it in water — a prohibition on the whole drying step.

What it looks like

Do not dry (natural drying prohibited)

An empty square with a cross through it.

What it means

Genuinely rare, and it is not the same as "do not tumble dry", which carries the circle inside the square. Because a plain crossed square forbids drying but not washing, it appears almost exclusively alongside a do-not-wash symbol on items that go to a professional cleaner. If you meet one on ordinary clothing, check whether the circle is simply faint — a crossed circle-in-square is the far more likely instruction.

Defined by ISO 3758. Where a symbol differs between standards, the difference is described above rather than resolved — both versions are in circulation on real labels.
