Earth has roughly three trillion trees, and they hold several hundred gigatonnes of carbon that would return to the atmosphere as they decayed or burned, sharply accelerating warming. The immediate regional effects would be hydrological: forests recycle a large share of their own rainfall through transpiration, so losing them turns wet regions dry, and root systems that hold soil in place would stop doing so, causing erosion and landslides on a continental scale. The oxygen worry is the part people get wrong. Marine phytoplankton account for roughly half of global oxygen production, and more importantly the atmosphere already contains about 21 per cent oxygen — an enormous standing reserve that would take thousands of years to draw down noticeably even with no photosynthesis at all. Biodiversity loss would be the largest single consequence, since forests hold most terrestrial species.
