Bringing the Moon from its current average 384,400 kilometres to half that distance would therefore multiply tidal range by eight, flooding vast areas of coast twice a day and grinding intertidal ecosystems into something unrecognisable. Tidal friction would also increase sharply, slowing Earth's rotation faster and heating the interior. The Moon would appear twice as wide in the sky, and eclipses would become far more frequent and total. Below the Roche limit — around 18,000 kilometres for a body held together by its own gravity — the Moon would be torn apart into a ring system, which is where the question stops being about tides.
